This is the relationship between Viktor Hargreeves and Leonard Peabody.

Viktor believed that his relationship with Leonard was genuine and that Leonard was the only person to ever truly understand his and care for his despite his insecurities.

At the time, he was very vulnerable, and desperate for love and affection. Leonard was able to exploit his and use that vulnerability to his advantage.

Because of the way Viktor was treated by his family, Viktor looked towards Leonard for support.

His naivety caused him to put all of his faith and trust in Leonard. Despite multiple warnings and hints that Leonard could be his downnfall, Viktor ignored his family's warnings.

Leonard destroyed the pills that Viktor took unknowingly to him to keep his powers muted.

After discovering his true nature and his manipulation towards him in order to unlock his powers for himself, Viktor retaliates by killing him.
