"What's so bad about being ordinary?"
—Vanya Hargreeves[src]

Vanya Hargreeves is one of the forty-three children who were all born on the same day in 1989, to a mother without any previous signs of pregnancy. The baby was one of seven adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves with the intention of training them to save the world. Unlike her six adoptive siblings, Vanya seemingly has no superpowers. She had a talent for violin, and when she was an adult wrote an autobiography about her life as the ordinary member of The Umbrella Academy.

However, Vanya's life was a lie. Early on, Sir Reginald discovered that her emotions were linked to her ability to harness sound and convert it into energy. Deeming Vanya's powers to be too great and potentially destructive, Sir Reginald worked to cover them up. She was placed on medication to suppress her emotional state, and Sir Reginald made her sister, Allison, convince her that she was ordinary by using her own power to subtly alter reality by lying.

Vanya learned the truth about her powers when Leonard Peabody came across Sir Reginald's journal and manipulated her to gain revenge on the Academy. After all the revelations and the way she was treated by her family, Vanya triggered the apocalypse.

Vanya is played by Ellen Page in the Netflix adaptation of The Umbrella Academy.

Biography

Early life

Vanya Hargreeves is one of forty-three children born simultaneously to mothers with no previous signs of pregnancy on the twelfth hour of October 1st, 1989. She is adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves and designated as his "Number Seven."[1]

At the age of four, Vanya proves to be troublesome. She dislikes oatmeal and refuses to eat it. Sir Reginald hires a succession of nannies to try and get Vanya to cooperate, but Vanya harnesses the power of a whistling kettle to kill (most likely (not confirmed), but at the very least, severly injure) each one in turn, when they try to make her eat the oatmeal. Finally, Vanya is introduced to Grace. The same thing happens to Grace; Vanya's power throws her across the room and she hits her head with a sickening crack. However, Grace is unfazed and gets back up, her head having been knocked 180 degrees around. Vanya is disturbed and watches as Grace moves her head back to the right position and encourages her to eat her oatmeal. Vanya quickly begins eating her breakfast.[2]

Vanya's powers are tested by Sir Reginald. In a controlled environment, Sir Reginald has Vanya concentrate on the resonance of a tuning fork, harnessing it and using it to destroy a wine glass.[3]

Vanya's training under Sir Reginald continues for twelve days straight with success. However, during a thunderstorm, Vanya is unable to concentrate on the resonance of the tuning fork. Instead, she harnesses the sound of the storm around her, destroying all of the wine glasses without a shred of control. Sir Reginald begins to see just how powerful Vanya is and concludes her training for the time being.[3]

Sir Reginald takes Vanya to a special soundproof vault he has constructed in the basement, telling her that it is a special place just for her. Sir Reginald wants to further test Vanya's abilities to see if they can be regulated. With Pogo's help, he locks a scared Vanya into the chamber.[3]

Sir Reginald tells the other children that Vanya is sick and had to be isolated. None of the children questioned it. Grace brought food and medicine for Vanya. One day, Sir Reginald brought Allison to the chamber and made her use her power on Vanya, telling her, "I heard a rumor, you think you're just ordinary."[3]

The Umbrella Academy

At the age of thirteen, the children of the Umbrella Academy make their first public appearance, stopping a robbery at the Capital West Bank. As the rest of the Academy deal with the thieves, Sir Reginald watches from above with Vanya. When Vanya asks why she cannot play with the rest of the children, Sir Reginald tells her it is because she is not special. Once the Academy has successfully stopped the robbery, Sir Reginald introduces the world to the inaugural class of the Umbrella Academy, but only mentions that he adopted six children, rather than seven.[1]

Despite not being part of the team, Vanya assisted Sir Reginald with training the other members of the Academy. Her brainwaves were monitored by her father while she slept. All of the children, except for Vanya, were given umbrella tattoos on their wrists. In an effort to feel included, Vanya drew one on her own wrist in pen.[1]

During the argument between Number Five and Sir Reginald at dinner shortly before Five disappeared, Vanya attempted to dissuade him from running away, by silently shaking her head at him from the other end of the table.[4]

After Number Five disappeared, Vanya always left the lights on for him. She was afraid that if Five returned home late and the house was dark, then he would leave again, since he would not be able to find them. Vanya would also leave his favorite snack, a peanut butter and marshmellow sandwich, out for him.[1]

With her siblings off on a mission, Sir Reginald tells Vanya to be prepared to study alone. Vanya sees Sir Reginald's violin and asks to borrow it as her studies pertained to music. Sir Reginald agrees. Vanya promises Grace that she will learn to play it and be extraordinary.[5]

Leaving the Academy

In 2014, Vanya purchases a typewriter from a pawn shop. She writes a tell-all biography about her life as Number Seven entitled "Extra-Ordinary: My Life as Number Seven". The book is a moderate success; Vanya engages in a press tour reading excerpts from the book. Eventually, interest wanes in Vanya's book and it is offered at a 50% discount.[6] After the publication of the book, Vanya sent a copy to her father with the inscription: "Dad, I figured, why not. V."[1]

Events of The Umbrella Academy

"We Only See Each Other at Weddings and Funerals"

Vanya plays a number of songs from The Phantom of the Opera at a violin audition. On the way home, she sees a news report on television that her father has died and takes a taxi to the Academy. Vanya's arrival is met with a mixed reception; Allison is pleased to see her, but Diego believes Vanya should not be there after writing her book about them. Vanya is welcomed by Pogo and asks if Sir Reginald ever read her book. Pogo tells her that he did not to the best of his knowledge.[1]

The reunion with the rest of the family is mixed. Luther suspects that their father was murdered and that one of them might be to blame. The return of Number Five through a temporal anomaly surprises all of the gathered siblings. They question him about his absence and then attend their father's memorial service in the courtyard. During the service, Luther and Diego get into a fight that ends when Diego draws blood. Vanya angrily tells him that he never knows when to stop, but Diego replies by asking if she has enough material for a sequel.[1]

Feeling unwelcome at the Academy, Vanya leaves. Pogo tells her that the Academy will always be her home and that is always welcome there. He also makes a point of telling her that Sir Reginald loved Vanya in his own way.[1]

When Vanya arrives home, she finds Number Five waiting for her. Because she is ordinary, Five believes that Vanya is the only one he can trust with the truth. He tells her that after he arrived in the future, he discovered that the human race had been destroyed in an apocalypse. Five has no idea what caused it, only that it occurs in eight days time.[1]

"Run Boy Run"

Number Five tells Vanya how he survived in the future. Vanya is understandably overwhelmed by Five's story and wonders if their father's warning that time travel can mess with the mind is the reason. Five brushes that off, believing Vanya is too young to understand or comprehend what he is trying to say. Vanya apologizes, telling him that she doesn't want to lose him again so soon after his return. She offers him the couch for the night and promises that they will talk again in the morning.[4]

When Vanya wakes, she finds the Five has left in the night. She goes in search of him and finds him in his old room at the Academy. Vanya apologizes for being dismissive, but Five assures her it is alright and maybe time travel is affecting his mind. Vanya offers to refer him to a therapist but Five tells her that he is going to try and get a good night's sleep instead. On her way out of the Academy, Vanya runs into an upset Allison who had recently had a heated conversation with her ex-husband, Patrick. Vanya tries to comfort her sister but her efforts fail when she infers that Allison is better off at the Academy, and not with her daughter. Allison gets angry with Vanya and tells her that she cannot blame all her problems on their father now she is an adult.[4]

Vanya returns to her apartment and her new student shows up, a man named Leonard Peabody. Her normal students are children so she is surprised that he wants violin lessons. Vanya and Leonard begin to bond and they have an obvious interest in each other but Vanya is reluctant to pursue it quickly.[4]

"Extra Ordinary"

Running late, Vanya arrives at rehearsals after the practice has begun. Although she tries to take her seat and set up without disturbing anyone, her attempts fail and the orchestra is forced to stop until she is ready. Vanya apologizes for being late, but the conductor comments that he didn't even notice.[6]

Once the rehearsal is over, Vanya talks with the violin first chair, Helen Cho, complimenting her skills. When Vanya comments that she has been practicing work that Helen makes look so easy, Helen replies that sometimes skill is not enough. Helen questions whether or not Vanya is truly passionate about the violin.[6]

Dejected, Vanya heads to Bricktown to visit Leonard's woodworking shop. The pair talk and continue to bond while Vanya admires his work. Leonard presents her with a wooden violinist figure that he made for her. Outside, Vanya accepts Leonard's invitation to dinner. Vanya is surprised when Allison arrives, wanting her to come to the Academy since they need to have a family meeting about Grace. Leonard recognizes Allison since she is a famous actress and member of the Umbrella Academy, then asks if Vanya was involved. Vanya tells him no, then likens herself to the fifth member of the Beatles. She is pleased when Leonard reveals he was always more of a Rolling Stones fan. As Leonard leaves, Allison apologizes for the way she spoke to Vanya at their last meeting, telling her that she is not good at being a sister.[6]

Vanya, Luther, Allison, Diego, and Klaus gather at the Academy to discuss Grace. Luther plays the security footage of Grace not helping Sir Reginald on the night he died, and further examination shows Grace taking Sir Reginald's monocle. The discussion turns to the possibility of shutting Grace down since Luther is concerned that she is malfunctioning – Grace's programming was meant to offer assistance in the event of an emergency. They take a vote on it. Luther and Allison want to shut Grace down. Diego is in opposition and tries to deny Vanya since he still believes she doesn't belong with the family. He changes his mind when Vanya agrees with keeping Grace online. Klaus is also in opposition, but the vote is not final since Five is not there and they postpone the decision.[6]

Shortly after, the Academy is invaded by Hazel and Cha Cha. Vanya stumbles into the chaos and is attacked by Hazel, suffering a head wound. Luther saves Vanya from Hazel. In the aftermath of the battle, Diego angrily berates Vanya since her lack of powers or skills is a liability that could have gotten her or any of them killed. Allison tries to calm the situation but the inference is clear – Vanya is not like them. Leaving the Academy, Vanya heads to Leonard's house where he takes her inside, concerned that she is bleeding from a head wound.[6]

"Man on the Moon"

The next morning, Vanya wakes on Leonard's couch, having fallen asleep. She has to attend rehearsal and is worried since she did not bring her medication refill meaning she would have to play without her pills. Leonard convinces Vanya that she can go one day without her medication and walks her to rehearsal even though it is not on his way at all. As they talk about their respective relationships with their families, they are passed by Helen Cho as they arrive at the Icarus Theatre. Vanya explains the entire concept of the "first chair" position in an orchestra and how she has not be unseated in five years.[7]

Allison finds Vanya after rehearsal. She apologizes for yesterday and gives Vanya her apartment keys. When Vanya asks why Allison has her keys, she tells her its a long story and takes Vanya for a drink. In the bar, Allison tells Vanya about finding Leonard in her apartment earlier in the day, finding it a little suspicious. Vanya is sure there is a reasonable explanation though. They continue to talk and bond as sisters.[7]

Vanya takes Allison back to her apartment. Allison loves it, with Vanya comments that her apartment is probably smaller than one of Allison's rooms. Going into the bedroom, Vanya finds that Leonard left flowers for her. She calls Leonard to thank him and they arrange to have breakfast the following morning.[7]

"Number Five"

The next morning, Allison arrives at Vanya's with breakfast. However, Vanya has to decline since she is meeting Leonard but is concerned that she has run out of medication. Allison admits that she has a bad feeling about Leonard, but Vanya does not think that Allison has the right to give her dating advice after not seeing her for twelve years. Vanya heads off to meet Leonard.[8]

At the coffee shop, Vanya talks with Leonard about Allison's attempts to be a sister, pointing out that they are all exactly the same age although sometimes it doesn't feel like it. Vanya tells Leonard that Helen has not been showing up to rehearsal lately, meaning that the first chair position is open. Vanya doesn't believe she has what it takes, but Leonard convinces her to audition.[8]

Allison tries to convince Vanya about her concerns surrounding Leonard, telling her that she tried to find information on him but there was nearly no records on him. Vanya is angry that Allison is checking up on her relationship, and believes that Allison doesn't trust her. Telling Allison that she is not her mother, Vanya asks her to leave and worry about her own daughter.[8]

At the Icarus Theatre, Vanya auditions for the position of first chair. At first, her playing is ordinary and does not inspire the conductor and others present. As Vanya plays, energy ripples out from her violin and captures the attention of the conductor and his staff. Enraptured, they listen to Vanya's playing.[8]

Vanya arrives at Leonard's house and excitedly tells him that she got the position of first chair. Leonard is ecstatic and Vanya is surprised about how well she played without her medication. Leonard tells her that she should play without it. Vanya and Leonard kiss and make love.[8]

"The Day That Wasn't"

Leonard convinces Vanya to invite her family to her first concert as first chair, telling her that they need to see how talented she is. Arriving at the Academy, Vanya finds Luther, Allison, Diego, and Klaus in a meeting. When asked what's going on, Allison looks at Leonard and mentions that it is a family matter. Vanya explodes since they did not bother to include her. Allison tries to calm her by telling her that she will fill her in when they are alone. Vanya reminds them that she has been left out of things all her life. She thought it was because of their father, but know she knows it was not just him, but the rest of the family. Vanya storms out, but Leonard claims that he left his coat and heads back.[9]

Outside, Vanya rages about her family and how she though they would be proud of her. As she angrily walks down the street, streetlights bend and cars are damaged. When Leonard points it out, telling her she caused it, she tells him that it is impossible. When the rain stops, Vanya claims it is a coincidence.[9]

Leonard tries to convince Vanya she has powers that have lain dormant. Vanya does not believe him and apologizes for being ordinary and disappointing him. Leonard tells her that nothing could be further from the truth.[9]

At Leonard's apartment, Vanya finds Sir Reginald's journal under his bed. Looking through it, she reads several entries about her confirming that Vanya does indeed have powers but that Sir Reginald covered them up and kept her controlled with medication because they were dangerous.[9]

The entire day is rewound as a result of Number Five altering the timeline by dropping into the family meeting at the Academy shortly after Vanya's argument with the family.[9]

"The Day That Was"

As with the previous version of the day, Vanya rages about her family to Leonard and bends the street lights and damages the cars. Again, she brushes it off as a coincidence as she doesn't have powers.[10]

Leonard invites Vanya to his grandmothers' isolated cabin. While at the Academy, he had overheard Number Five talking about finding Harold Jenkins – his real name. Unknown to Vanya, Leonard is fully aware of her potential abilities, having found Sir Reginald's journal in a dumpster after it was thrown away by Klaus. He also had a grudge against the Academy, having been born on the same day but being in no way special.[10]

In the woods, Leonard tries to get Vanya to use her powers by trying to move a boat on the water. Vanya feels ridiculous even trying, and wonders how her siblings ever used theirs with a straight face. After Vanya makes no progress, they decided to go for dinner in the local town.[10]

After finishing dinner, Vanya and Leonard walk out into the parking lot. They find Leonard's vehicle surrounded by three drunk men. Leonard tries to get them to move, but they refuse. As they try to leave, Leonard confronts the men and one smacks Vanya's butt. The men start to assault Leonard while holding Vanya back. As they kick Leonard while he is laying on the ground, Vanya feels her anger rise and her latent power triggers. A shock wave bursts from her body and sends the three men flying across the parking lot.[10]

Later, at the hospital, Vanya watches over Leonard as he recovers from the beating. He is badly wounded, including missing an eye.[10]

"I Heard a Rumor"

At the hospital, Vanya is concerned when Leonard tells her that he is being discharged. Leonard lies and says they don't need him for observation, just to come back the following day to fit a prosthetic eye. A member of staff catches him before he leave and forces Leonard to sign voluntary discharge papers. As he does, Vanya inquires about the other three men from the parking lot. She learns that two are dead and the third is in critical condition.[3]

At the cabin, Leonard tries to convince Vanya that what happened the previous night was not her fault. Vanya knows otherwise, and is horrified that she killed the two men. Leonard points out that she was trying to defend him, and that her power is a gift. Vanya does not see it that way, seeing it as one more thing she could not do right. Leonard promises to help her try and control it.[3]

Leonard helps Vanya to figure out that her power is linked to her emotions, and she is able to focus on the sound around her and change it into energy. Vanya remembers focusing on the sound of a car engine the night before, and it was the trigger that allowed her powers to activate. Leonard secretly uses Sir Reginald's journal to guide her training, almost slipping up when he accurately describes how Vanya's powers work but managing to cover it by saying he was just putting it together. Vanya manages to repeat the feat on a less destructive scale than the previous night.[3]

Leonard tries to make Vanya understand that her accomplishments were extraordinary and that she has been special all along. Vanya mentions practising, but she means her violin because her concert is the following day. Leonard is put out because he wants to continue her power training, believing it to be important. Vanya tells him that her music is important as well. Leonard reluctantly agrees and leaves her to practise.[3]

Vanya practises her violin, then goes looking for Leonard but he has left the cabin. Vanya begins to have a panic attack and only calms down by remembering Leonard's help controlling her powers earlier and playing her violin. As she plays, Vanya's power are focused by the violin and cause things to move throughout the cabin.[3]

Vanya continues playing, and is surprised when Allison arrives. Allison sees all the weird things happening and wonders what is causing it. Vanya admits that it is her, and she has apparently had powers all along. Allison tells her that is great, but has other things on her mind. Vanya wants to know what, and Allison tells her that Leonard Peabody is actually Harold Jenkins, a convicted murderer. Vanya cannot believe it, even when Allison told her about being in Leonard's house and finding the macabre shrine to the Umbrella Academy. Vanya starts to sob, not knowing how to deal with all the new information.[3]

Allison suddenly remembers the incident from when they were four, and tells Vanya about using her power on her. Vanya is furious, accusing Allison of knowing about her powers all along and being responsible for keeping it a secret. Allison denies it, having not realized the significance of that day until Vanya's revelation about her powers. Vanya's rage grows, blaming Allison for everything that had happened in her life and accusing her of being threatened by Vanya. Vanya's fury builds, threatening to tear the cabin apart. With no choice, Allison tries to stop her by using her power. Vanya slices with her violin bow and the energy cuts Allison's throat.[3]

Clutching her bleeding throat, Allison drops to floor as Vanya suddenly realizes what she has done. Crying and sobbing, Vanya tells Allison that she is sorry and did not mean to hurt her. As Allison bleeds out on the cabin floor, Leonard arrives and pulls Vanya away, telling her that she did what she to and they have to go.[3]

"Changes"

At his home, Leonard tries to convince Vanya that they have to leave because her family will come after them for killing Allison. Still in shock, Vanya hopes that if she explains that she lost control they will forgive her. Leonard convinces her that he is the only one on her side and that she is special.[2]

As they get ready, Vanya knocks Leonard's bag off the side and finds Sir Reginald's journal inside. She begins to realize that Leonard has been manipulating her from the start and has known about her powers. Vanya begins to realize that Allison was right about Leonard all along. Leonard tries to convince her that her family does not care about her at all but Vanya realizes that she loves them. Leonard turns on her, calling her weak and pathetic and thumping Sir Reginald's journal. Emotionally shattered, Vanya's powers flare and she kills Leonard by sending multiple sharp objects flying into his chest.[2]

Going back to her apartment, Vanya listens to her telephone messages. The last one is from Allison, apologizing for the way they left things at the Academy and telling Vanya that she loves her. Vanya breaks down crying as she listens to her sister's message.[2]

Vanya decides to go the Academy. She meets Luther in the atrium, who now knows all about Vanya's powers from Allison and Pogo. Vanya asks about Allison and is relieved to learn that she is alive. Breaking down, she tells Luther that she never meant to hurt Allison. Luther knows that she didn't and takes her in a hug. However, Luther now knows how dangerous she is and uses his strength to choke her into unconsciousness.[2]

Waking up in the secret soundproof chamber below the Academy, she panics and begs to be let out while Luther tells Diego and Klaus about her powers. They want to help her, but Luther refuses to open the door. Vanya watches Allison arrive and tries to tell her she is sorry. Even Allison wants to let Vanya go, telling Luther that it was her fault. Despite their objections, Luther refuses to let Vanya go until they know what they are dealing with.[2]

Left alone in the chamber, Vanya's reflection changes to her thirteen year old self and encourages her to embrace everything that the others are afraid she is. Young Vanya convinces her older self that her family are going to keep her locked up forever. In the sound proof room, Vanya focuses on her own heartbeat and harnesses it to create the energy she needs to break out of her cell.[2]

"The White Violin"

Vanya's powers turn her eyes white and she moves through the Academy. As she reaches rooms, she remembers incidents from her childhood that took place in them; catching Luther and Allison in a private moment, being told that she can't go on missions without a power, being left out of a family photograph. The memories cause Vanya to destroy each one in turn. Pogo confronts Vanya in order to give her siblings time to escape. He tells her that her brothers and sister are not to blame for what happened to her. Vanya asks Pogo if he knew about her powers. When he admits he did, Vanya kills Pogo by impaling him on a mounted set of antlers. Vanya completes her destruction of the Academy.[5]

Vanya goes home and gets ready for her concert, then travels to the Icarus Theatre. The concert begins and Vanya plays beautifully. Unknown to Vanya, her siblings have come to stop her as they have realized that she is the cause of the apocalypse. As Vanya plays, she see Allison in the crowd. They see each other and smile. Allison wants to try talking to Vanya, but Luther and Diego use it as a distraction and charge Vanya. With a sweep of her violin bow, she unleashes a wave of energy that knocks them flying. The crowd flees and the orchestra try to do the same. Vanya uses her powers to keep them playing.[5]

Allison recognizes that Vanya's violin is her lightning rod, and they might have a chance if they get it away from her. Armed gunmen burst into the Theatre and try to kill the Umbrella Academy and stop them from preventing the apocalypse. The orchestra flees but Vanya keeps playing. The Academy fights back, with Klaus able to manifest Ben's spirit into the real world to deal with the gunmen. As Vanya continues to play, Luther, Diego, Klaus and Five decide that if they rush her one of them might get through to stop her. Their plan fails when Vanya uses her power to suspend them all in the air, connected to her by energy tendrils and draining the life from them.[5]

Behind Vanya, Allison aims a gun at her head. Instead of shooting her, Allison places the gun next to her ear and fires, disrupting her power. Vanya releases her brothers, and a lance of energy burst from her body and streaks through the roof of the Theatre, striking the moon. The moon begins to break apart.[5]

The apocalypse has not been averted. Five has a plan to use his time travel powers to transport them all away before the end so they can try and fix it. All of the Academy agree – even Ben, now that his siblings know he is around – and Vanya's unconscious body is gathered up by Luther. He questions the wisdom of bringing her, but Five tells him that Vanya will always be the cause of the apocalypse unless they fix her. Five succeeds in transporting them all away before the apocalypse can kill them.[5]

Powers

  • Sound Absorption: For Vanya to be able to manipulate sound, she must first absorb it.
    • Sound Manipulation: Vanya can manipulate sound to her desire. In some cases, she can do so to devastating effects.
      • Telekinesis: Through manipulating sound waves, Vanya can move objects to her desire. When confronting Leonard, she manipulated the sound waves around him, levitating him above the ground and proceeding to telekinetically move various objects in the kitchen to impale him.
      • Sound Wave Projection: Once absorbing sound, Vanya can release it in blasts which can be used to knock people backwards. She also absorbed enough sound and directed it to the sky where it hit the moon, causing pieces of it to break apart causing the end of the world.
        • Geokinesis: Vanya is able to use the sound waves to devastating effects such as causing irreparable damage to buildings.
    • Enhanced Hearing: While training in the forest, Vanya was able to hear things which would usually be impossible for the average human hearing through concentration. For example, she was able to hear the chimes from the cabin. Vanya is also able to focus on a specific sound and block out the others, no matter how loud they are.
  • Atmokinesis: Vanya is able to manipulate the weather to a certain extent and is able to make it rain when she is sad or angry. She seems to be able to manipulate wind as well and sounds of thunder can be heard some times while she uses this power, hinting at lightning.

Relationships

Sir Reginald Hargreeves

Vanya's relationship with her father was not a happy one. She was ranked last of the children as "Number Seven", and Sir Reginald bluntly told Vanya that she was not special.[1]

While she was allowed to participate to some degree with the team, such as helping in training exercises, Vanya was excluded in other areas. Notably, she was the only child to not have an Umbrella Academy tattoo on her wrist. In an effort to fit in, she drew the logo onto her wrist in pen.[1]

Pogo

Vanya and Pogo shared a genuine affection with each other. Pogo insisted that the Academy was and always would be her home even if she felt like she was not welcome. He also tried to reassure her that Sir Reginald did love her in his own way.[1] Vanya's love towards Pogo was later shattered after discovering that Reginald had suppressed her powers her whole life. In retailation for Pogo's lies, Vanya murders him.

Diego Hargreeves

Vanya and Diego's relationship was soured by the publication of her autobiography. Diego believed that Vanya had no right to return to the Academy in the wake of Sir Reginald's death.[1]

Allison Hargreeves

Allison was surprised but pleased to see Vanya arrive at the Academy after Sir Reginald's death. After Diego's comments that Vanya did not belong there, Allison told her to ignore him.[1] Vanya tried to comfort her sister after Allison had a heated phone conversation with her ex-husband Patrick, telling her that Patrick sounded like an asshole and she was better off at the Academy. Allison angrily tells her that her place is with her daughter and questions whether or not Vanya has even loved anyone so much that she would die for them and brings up Vanya's isolation from the rest of them. When Vanya points out that it was their father who kept them separate, Allison tells her that their father did not make her write that book about them and that she is an adult now and can no longer blame their father for her problems.[4]

Number Five

After Number Five's disappearance, Vanya actively looked out for his return. She kept a light on for him so he could find them, and left his favorite snack out every night for when he returned.[1]

After returning to the present, Number Five believed that Vanya was the one he could trust with the truth about the coming apocalypse because she was ordinary.[1]

Grace

When Vanya was young, she went through multiple nannies who pressured her into eating oatmeal and other things that she didn't enjoy. When they pressured her too much, Vanya would kill them. Grace was invented to be a motherly figure and a nanny to Vanya and the other kids. When Grace pressured Vanya to do certain things, Vanya was unable to kill Grace and succumbed to what she was told to do. Grace was successful in being a mother figure to Vanya and Vanya cared deeply for Grace.

Leonard Peabody/Harold Jenkins

Vanya believed that her relationship with Leonard was genuine and that he was the only person to ever truly understand her and care for her despite her insecurities. However, after discovering his true nature and his manipulation towards her in order to unlock her powers for himself, Vanya retaliates by murdering him.
