The Umbrella Academy was a group formed by Sir Reginald Hargreeves. It is comprised of seven of the babies born to forty-three women who gave birth simultaneously without explanation in 1989. The group frequently uses time travel to stop the impending apocalypse, and fights the time moderation organization known as the Temps Commission. Their last attempt to save humanity by altering the timeline resulted in the wiping of their formation and the creation of the Sparrow Academy.

The Handler

The Handler is perhaps the academy's nemesis.

In season 1, she was the leader of the commission, and the person who recruited old man Five to join the commission in the first place. When Five breaks the contract, she sends a pair of assassins to see Five. She is shot in the head by Hazel at the end of season 1, but survives.

In season 2, she is demoted and lost her place at the head of the commission. This time she goes to the field with her daughter Lila to try and gain her power back. She uses Five to kill the board, bring her back Carmichael so she can rule again. She is Killed by the remaining swede in the Cooper's barn.

AJ Carmichael (Comics)

Carmichael is introduced in season 2 as the new head of the commission. He isn't that evil, just for the fact that he seemingly sent the swedes to this time hunt down the entire academy for changing the timeline. He is killed by the Handler.

• The members of the umbrella academy are 7 out of 43 children with super powers in the world
• The team has two LGBT characters:
  • In season 1, Klaus Hargreeves is revealed to be pansexual. When he travelled back to the Vietnam War in 1963, he falls in love with a soldier named Dave. He also mentioned another boyfriend. It’s also known that Klaus uses he/they pronouns.
  • In season 2, Vanya Hargreeves is revealed to be bisexual. After landing in October 1963, she joins the Cooper farm to help babysit Harlan Cooper. Unhappy with her marriage, Harlan's mom Sissy Cooper kisses Vanya, and the two show affection for each other. She also dated a man named Leonard Peabody in 2019 of the original timeline, proving she has more than just affection for women.
• One of the seven children, Ben Hargreeves, passed away during a mission in his teen years in the original timeline. The cause of his death is unknown.
