"The Unbearable Tragedy of Getting What You Want"[1] is the first episode in the fourth season of The Umbrella Academy, and thirty-first overall.
Synopsis[]
The family teams up to find a kidnapped Viktor while attempting to adjust to normal life. Lila and Five probe a mysterious group called the Keepers.
Plot[]
Six years after the universe was reset, the Umbrella Academy has largely drifted apart: Viktor runs a bar in Canada; Luther works as a stripper and squats in the dilapidated Hargreeves mansion; Diego and Lila have married and had three children; Allison has divorced Ray; Klaus is now a sober and obsessive germaphobe and lives with Allison; Number Five works with the CIA; and Ben is in prison for running cryptocurrency scams.
After Ben is released on parole, the siblings meet at Diego and Lila's daughter Grace's birthday party. Diego and Lila are chafing and arguing due to their frustrations with parenthood. Before Viktor can join them, he is kidnapped by a mysterious figure. The siblings' interactions are lukewarm and awkward, and the party ends in disaster.
Meanwhile, a conspiracy theorist movement called the Keepers, led by the amoral Dr. Gene and Jean Thibedeau, is growing among the masses. It believes that, based on displaced objects from the timelines of the previous seasons, the current timeline is not the "true" one and that a cataclysmic event known as the Cleanse will restore the world to how it should be.
While undercover, Five runs into Lila, who has also infiltrated the Keepers. Diego, suspicious of Lila's whereabouts, follows her and sees her in a cafe with somebody (unbeknownst to him, it is Five in disguise), leading him to think she is unfaithful to him.
After Luther receives a note saying that Viktor has been kidnapped and where to find him, the family rescues him, only to be approached by a certain Sy Grossman for help. Grossman, who knows they were the Umbrella Academy in another timeline, claims the Keepers kidnapped his daughter Jennifer. Five notices a jar of Marigold (the source of their former powers) among Grossman's belongings and takes it, promising to help him find Jennifer.
Being the only one who wants powers again, Ben spikes the family's drinks with the marigold before drinking it himself.
