- "This is the failure of my life. I sit here staring at centuries wasted all because a different me was unkind to his children."
- —Sir Reginald Hargreeves to Number Five[src]
Sir Reginald Hargreeves was a refined, opportunistic, and manipulative alien scientist posing as an eccentric human billionaire. In the Sparrow timeline, after a botched meeting with the time-displaced Umbrella Academy in 1963, he adopted different Marigold-infused children to form the Sparrow Academy.
He eventually reunited with the Umbrellas in 2019 and utilized them and the surviving Sparrows to completely reset the universe via the Hotel Oblivion machine. The reset gave him control of the expansive and powerful corporation Hargreeves Enterprises. Finally, it reunited him with his wife Abigail until their entire universe was threatened by the Cleanse, and he was forced to confront it with the Umbrellas.
Biography[]
Sir Reginald was pursued by time-displaced members of the Umbrella Academy on the eve of the Kennedy assassination in late November 1963. He was left seemingly unimpressed by them during their encounter and could not help their predicament.[1] However, some advice he gave Number Five allowed him to discover a new aspect to his powers and save his siblings from the Handler.[2] The Umbrella Academy believed Sir Reginald to be responsible for the assassination of John F. Kennedy and he left a decoy in his place on the knoll and a message for Diego stating "told you so." When the Majestic 12 threatened to expose Sir Reginald, he removed his mask and slaughtered them.[3]
In 1989, Sir Reginald once adopted a different group of children. He formed the Sparrow Academy though he still used Ben, who Sir Reginald did not meet in 1963 as Klaus lied about his existence. In this timeline, he did not die but was still alive in April 2019.[2]
Personality[]
This section needs a rewrite |
As shown and much like his original self, Reginald was an incredibly complicated individual. As shown after meeting the Umbrella Academy, who had traveled back in time, Reginald took their explanations on their identities and the coming crisis in cold stride and analyzed them and their abilities. As shown, Reginald did not have much empathy or attachment to his future "children", and instead of adopting them again as he did in the original timeline, he had instead decided to adopt a new lineup of children with abilities and powers he deemed "better" than his first group of "children". Despite this, however, Reginald ended up treating his new children the same way he treated his first: cold, distant, and emotionally abusive towards them and treating them more like lab rats than humans.
It has been implied that, like the Umbrella Academy, he never gave them real names, only referring to them as numbers he assigned in order of how useful he viewed them. Much like with the Umbrella Academy, this caused the Sparrows to harbor deep resentment and even outright hatred for their adoptive father. This, again, much like the Umbrella Academy, resulted in much of the Sparrows's dysfunctional relationships, multiple neuroses, and destructive behavior. Inevitably causes the Sparrows to rise against him and take control of the Sparrow Academy for their own, and ends with Reginald being turned into a prisoner of his own home by his children.
After being reunited with Abigail, Reginald was more content with his life. He was also more open about being an alien, expressing disgust to Viktor at what Reginald saw as the emotional weakness of humanity and his own superiority. However, Reginald is shown to have a degree of empathy under his ruthlessness, giving Viktor a chance to talk Ben down and hesitating to have his men simply shoot Ben. When Reginald questioned why he did that, Abigail suggested that it was because, in the end, he was a good man. Reginald admitted that everything he had done was out of his love for his wife and loneliness. Still, Abigail saw her death as her penance for destroying their world and Reginald's resurrection of her as hubris. After learning how far Abigail had gone to stop him and confronted by her about his actions, Reginald finally admitted that he was wrong and accepted his demise at the hands of the Cleanse.
Powers and abilities[]
Powers[]
- Unknown Alien Physiology: To be added
- Longevity: just like his counterpart, it is unclear how old Sir Reginald is, but he has a much longer lifespan than humans, living for over 90 years in New York since his arrival in 1928. Since his outward human appearance is a prosthetic disguise, his aging is likely artificial to avoid suspicion.
Abilities[]
- Master Combatant: Sir Reginald possesses extensive physical and combative ability and is a skilled athlete and martial artist. He managed to fight on equal terms against Diego taking advantage at the beginning of the fight.
- Master Acrobat: Sir Reginald is an excellent acrobat. His jumps and acrobatics allowed him to dodge some of Diego's attacks during his confrontation, even a knife thrown by him.
- Master Assassin: Sir Reginald is a skilled assassin who almost killed Diego during his confrontation and brutally killed all members of the Majestic 12 after revealing his real identity.
- Genius-Level Intellect: Sir Reginald is a genius in various fields of science. He created the serum that would later cure Pogo of his accident and increase his intelligence to the point of being able to speak the human language. He also provided the technology to the Majestic 12 in exchange for their assurance that they would not engage in activities on the moon's dark side.
- Expert Tactician: Sir Reginald is a tactical genius. He orchestrated The Umbrella Academy's action plans during the missions and also orchestrated their meeting in the past so that he could meet his pursuers. After learning that Diego was going to intervene in his plans with President Kennedy, he orchestrated a plan to deceive him even though he didn't know that the Majestic 12 would kill the president later.
Relationships[]
In a flashback to his previous life, Sir Reginald is seen with Abigail Hargreeves, either his beloved one or wife, who is visibly sick. She calls him 'Reg' and tells him to leave her to die, as the world 'needs him'. Sir Reginald does as asked but never speaks directly of her again, only referencing her as "the most important thing in the world" while trying to explain why he must reset the universe.
In the 1960s, he is seen in a relationship with Grace, with whom he worked to take care of Pogo and send him to space. Grace breaks off the relationship when Sir Reginald is unwilling to divulge the scope of his involvement with the Majestic 12 once she finds evidence of it. Later in his life, he modeled the robot caretaker of the Sparrow Academy children after Grace.
