"Meet the Family"[1] is the first episode in the third season of The Umbrella Academy.
Synopsis[]
After averting a doomsday in Dallas, the Umbrella siblings return to a very different Academy - now ruled by the powerful and hostile Sparrows.
Plot[]
SPOILERS AHEAD On October 1, 1989, 16 women around the world gave birth despite not showing any signs of labor when the day first began. Eccentric billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves adopts six of the children, Marcus, Ben, Fei, Alphonso, Sloane, and Jayme, as well as a psykronium cube named Christopher, and builds them into a competent and popular superhero teamed dubbed the "Sparrow Academy".
The Umbrella siblings return from their adventures in Dallas to find themselves in an altered timeline where the Sparrows have replaced them, causing a flaming ball of energy to form underneath the Academy. The Umbrellas fight the Sparrows and are overpowered until Vanya unleashes a burst of energy to defeat them. During this, Reginald reveals he adopted six other children instead of the Umbrellas after witnessing how badly he messed up during his first selections.
The Umbrellas take shelter at the Hotel Obsidian, but inadvertently leave the briefcase behind at the Academy. Meanwhile, Grace discovers the ball of energy and begins worshiping it as her god. Vanya meets with Marcus and threatens to embarrass him in front of the public. Fearing the Sparrows' reputation will be ruined, Marcus deals with Vanya and agrees to hand over the briefcase in exchange for their rivalry to end. Fei and Ben use Fei's crows to spy on Vanya and Marcus, while Diego learns that he and Lila have a son named Stan, who is left with Diego while Lila leaves with a briefcase.
While searching for the briefcase, Marcus discovers the ball of energy in the basement and is killed when he is evaporated and sucked inside.
