This is the relationship between the adopted brothers Diego and Luther Hargreeves.
Diego and Luther are adopted brothers and very close with each other, but mostly have a sibling rivalry. Throughout Season One, they were constantly arguing but also worked together when necessary. They searched for Five together and have connected various times. They grew up together. Luther took responsibility for all of his siblings, acting as the authoritative figure. As Diego was rebellious, he would often argue with Luther for acting as their guardian. There are many factors that played into their relationship, causing them to argue and disagree. One factor is their father. While Luther idolized and glorified his father, Diego felt scarred by his father and the traumatic life and childhood he planned for Number Two. Diego and Luther constantly argued over their father, but always had good intentions in the end.
History[]
Both Luther and Diego were raised by Sir Reginald Hargreeves, eccentric millionaire and business man. They were trained constantly day in and day out. When younger, they worked together to defeat robbers and any other criminals and were honored and praised in the paper and on the news. Both of them were deeply scarred and traumatized by their fathers treatment and behavior towards them.
Throughout The Umbrella Academy Series[]
In We Only See Each Other at Weddings and Funerals, The remaining members of the Hargreeves family converge on the Academy in the wake of their father's death. Luther suspects that one of the others killed their father; despite the coroner's report stating he died of a heart attack, Luther suspects foul play since Sir Reginald's monocle is missing. Luther and Diego converse about their fathers missing monocle. Luther suggests that this might be a hint as to how Reginald died, while Diego implies that Luther is overreacting. At the Academy, Luther goes into his childhood room and puts on some music. As the music plays, each member of the Hargreeves family begins to dance in private, showing that although they are vastly different people, there is an underlying connection between them. The dancing is interrupted by a lightning storm. Heading into the courtyard, they watch as Number Five re-appears through a temporal anomaly.

Diego speaks ill of his own father in front of Luther.
In Run Boy Run, Luther visits Diego at his home, the boiler room of a local gym that he uses in exchange for mopping floors. While there, he discovers that Diego could not have killed their father since he was fighting on the night in question. Luther asks him why Diego didn't just tell him that; Diego retorts that he shouldn't have had to prove his innocence to the family.
In Extra Ordinary, Luther, Allison, Diego, Klaus, and Viktor gather at the Academy to discuss Grace. Luther shows the others the video recording and they realize it shows Grace taking Sir Reginald's monocle. Luther wonders where it is now, since he searched everywhere, including Grace's possessions. Diego admits to taking it from Grace after the funeral because he knew Luther would act this way if he found it on her. The discussion turns to the possibility of shutting Grace down. Her programming was meant to kick in to save someone's life if it was in jeopardy, and Luther thinks her hardware must be breaking down if she failed to save Sir Reginald and allowed him to die. They take a vote; Luther and Allison want to shut Grace down. Diego, Viktor, and Klaus vote against, with Klaus telling them that Ben would agree with him if he was here. Ben's spirit disagrees. Luther insists the vote isn't final, since Five isn't there, and they postpone the decision. During a battle with Hazel and Cha cha, Luther's ape-like body is revealed to his siblings when he saves them from a fallen chandelier.
In Man on the Moon, Luther and Diego go in search of Five. Luther and Diego search Argyle Public Library for Five after Diego found Five's copy of Viktor's book stamped with the library's logo. They find Five passed out drunk, clutching Dolores. Luther and Diego take Five to the gym. Still drunk, Five tells them the identity of the two assassins who attacked the Academy and that the apocalypse is coming. At the gym, Luther and Diego leave Five asleep in Diego's bed.
